In 1937 the British War office, realising that European war was imminent issued an urgent specification for a new, short wheelbase 4 x 4 artillery tractor. Guy Motors of Wolverhampton had already produced a four wheel drive version of their 4 x 2 Guy “Ant” which they called the Quad. They modified it to meet the new requirement and as the Guy Quad Ant, distinctive for its round backed steel “Beetle” body (which was designed for easy decontamination following gas attack) and short wheel base it very quickly made a name for itself.
